Sweep

For a fun weekend dinner, try these Sweep patties. Served on toasted brioche rolls with yoghurt sauce, this recipe combines the fresh flavours of fennel and green apple with a perfect crunch.

The sweep is commonly observed by divers in South Australia because of their nature to reside on rocky reefs, between 1 to 30 metres deep.

Texture
Medium to firm.

Flavour
Mild not overpowering.

Storing
Should only be eaten fresh.

Cooking
Best when complimented with stronger flavours such as garlic and herbs.

Wine pairing
White wines, particularly sauvignon blanc and pinot grigio accompany sweep well.

Catching Sweep

Habitat
Rocky reefs between 1-30 metres deep, larger Sweep tend to be found in deep reefs.

Catch
Sweep are often caught fishing near rocky areas and reefs.

Seasonality
While breeding season is between May and August, it can be caught all year round.

Bait
Using soft baits such a mussels, worms, pipis or small pieces of fish yield the best returns. However, they are commonly caught when seeking other species of fish. See bait and berley use for more.

Size
Minimum legal size is 24cm from snout to end of tail. See size, bag and boat limits for more.

Gear
When fishing for sweep, ensure the hook is quite small due to the nature of their small mouths. Half pilchards can be used for optimal success. See recreational fishing gear for more.
